Find the Main Idea in each of the following paragraphs:

1) There are several events that can change the Earth's surface very quickly. Volcanoes can erupt and spread lava, rock and ash for several miles. Earthquakes can leave large cracks in the Earth's surface.

2) Most of the world's volcanoes are part of the "The Ring of Fire." This is a ring of volcanoes that form a circle around the Pacific Ocean. Thousands of volcanoes make up "The Ring of Fire." These volcanoes formed the sea floor and many underwater mountains.

3) Earthquakes are caused when the plates of the Earth's crust move. Earthquakes happen along "fault lines" in the earth’s crust. When the plates in the Earth suddenly shift, the Earth will begin to shift, shake or tremble.

4) Scientists can measure the intensity of an earthquake. They use an instrument called the Richter scale. The Richter scale compares the strength of different earthquakes. Earthquakes below 2.0 usually can’t be felt. Earthquakes over 5.0 on the scale can cause damage. A magnitude 7.0 is a major earthquake and can cause tremendous damage.

    1. Deborah,
The spelling words will be the same. Some of the transition words will be on the exam. The words for the nouns, adjectives, verbs are completely different. So, practice separating the nouns, adjectives, verbs. The main idea paragraphs will be totally different, so use these ones for practice. The past tense sentences are totally different, but the activity is the same on the exam.

Remember main idea is a sentence. Try to take all the extra details away. One way to do this is to think about only using 7-10 words.

    1. Yael,
Remember we like to try and keep the main idea to 5-10 of the most important words. The first sentence of a paragraph usually gives us that information, but the rest of it is important too!

For the past tense, remember we worked on changing present to past tense. You will see sentences like the ones that are here. The interrogative and negative sentences we worked on (your rule, remember? :>) will not be on this exam.
